Who we are:

Sunshine Centres for Seniors is a non-profit organization providing social, recreational and health promotion day programs for seniors in the Greater Toronto Area. Our mission is to reduce social isolation, improve the health and well-being of older adults and to empower them to lead meaningful and connected lives in which they are engaged and participating in the community. We provide programs at 6 different sites across downtown Toronto as well as our unique flagship program, Camp Sunshine on Ward’s Island. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sunshine Centres is offering online virtual programs.

The Opportunity:

We currently have one (1) opening for a highly motivated, organized, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as full-time Program and Special Events Manager on contract. We are seeking an individual with extensive experience in recreation management for seniors and who is passionate about making a difference. Reporting to the Executive Director and the Associate Executive Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing our Program Department as well as planning and implementing all of Sunshine’s annual special events.

Responsibilities:

Hire, manage and directly supervise a diverse team of Program Staff at our city and island programs including scheduling, supervising and mentoring and creating and overseeing the development of monthly program plans and calendars.

Manage the creation, planning and implementation of social, recreational and health promotion programs as well as facilitate programs when needed;

Manage, organize and directly supervise our Camp Sunshine program on Ward’s Island. This includes planning theme weeks, preparing and organizing correspondence with all groups and participants, hiring, training and directly supervising staff, managing supplies and food for Camp and directly overseeing and managing the day-to-day running of the program and building operations;

Planning, organizing and implementing all of Sunshine’ s major events including our Annual General Meeting, Rainbow Pride Festival, Strawberry Festival, 1950’s Sock Hop, and Holiday Celebrations;

Assisting with and playing a role in grant applications and implementation including providing creative new ideas for grant proposals, assisting in the writing process and organizing and managing the execution of grant projects and deliverables;

Responsibly and efficiently maintaining and organizing statistics and quarterly program evaluations for all Sunshine programs;

Work closely with the Associate Executive Director and the Communications and Volunteer Manager in order to maintain and assist with day to day operations;

Positively represent Sunshine Centres in the community as well as foster our organization’s mission and inclusive culture;

Work with our dedicated team of volunteers, corporate volunteer groups and intergenerational volunteers;

Contribute energy and passion while maintaining a leadership role within our cohesive staff team and contributing to the collective work of Sunshine Centres for Seniors.

Qualifications:

Diploma or degree in activation, gerontology, recreation and leisure studies, social services, community services, or similar field of study;

At least two (2) years experience managing a Recreation or Program department;

Extensive experience with developing, implementing and facilitating recreational activities, programs and special events for seniors. Must have a strong and solid programming background;

Experience working with seniors including marginalized seniors and those from diverse cultures and backgrounds;

Extensive knowledge and experience in grant writing and project management;

Strong autonomy, initiative and leadership skills;

Well developed time management, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;

An openness to all challenges presented and the flexibility to adapt to ever changing situations and prioritize tasks and job requirements;

Level-headed with the ability to work under tight and changing deadlines;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Highly organized and enthusiastic about the work they are doing with the strong ability to multi-task;

Skills and experience in developing and maintaining new and existing community contacts and partnerships;

Access to use of a car is an asset.
