EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HAMILTON JEWISH FAMILY SERVICES
The Executive Director is the key management leader of Hamilton Jewish Family Services (HJFS). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, strategic plan, programming, and management of the agency. Other key duties include fund development, marketing, and community outreach. This position reports directly to the HJFS Board of Directors.
ADMINISTRATIVE
• Research, prepare, and write a variety of different documents, such as funding proposals, meeting minutes, briefing notes, public reports, and newsletters
• Oversee operational aspects of the agency including communications and human resources
• Utilize a variety of software tools to collect and input data, analyze information, and issue reports
• Report to funders on granting outcomes
• Manage a staff contingent of 12+ full and part-time workers; responsible for onboarding, recruitment, staff satisfaction survey, health and safety, performance reviews, team wellness, et cetera
• Develop marketing strategy and ensure it is implemented effectively
GOVERNANCE
• Support HJFS Board of Directors through monthly reports, ongoing communication with Board president, attendance at Board meetings, correspondence with Board, etc.
• Participate, as needed, in agency committees, such as Governance, Finance, and Personnel
• Ensure Strategic Plan of Board is implemented, operationalized, and communicated to stakeholders
• Work with the HJFS Board of Directors and Governance Committee to create relevant policies and procedures for the agency
• Assist Board with succession planning, training, and recruitment
• Assist Board and solicitor with re-writing of agency By-laws to ensure ONCA compliance
• Ensure compliance with By-laws, legislation, and policies
COMMUNITY BUILDING
• Participate in collaborative community building opportunities with a variety of partners, such as the Hamilton Jewish Federation, Hamilton Food Share, and Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies
• Represent HJFS strategic goals and priorities in different working groups, committees, communities of practice, focus groups, and tables
• Engage diverse voices to participate in Hamilton Jewish Family Services, including those from different regions (such as Niagara, Halton), individuals with lived/living experience, et cetera
• Ensure agency continues a strong community engagement strategy through usage of newsletter, written articles, social media, and public education opportunities
• Advocate – where appropriate – on issues pertaining to the agency and clients
• Enhance public relations with a variety of different stakeholders, and investigate opportunities for volunteer engagement
CLIENT SERVICES
• Ensure programs and services are responsive to needs within the community
• Assist programming staff, as needed, with direct frontline client support delivery, including the Hamilton Kosher Food Bank, Case Management, and Advocacy
• Provide frontline support through calls to clients, assisting with person-to-person meetings, helping with the HJFS Friendship Circle, and advocacy
• Work with agency stakeholders to engage in programming evaluation and enhancement
• Provide supervision and coaching to staff on client cases
• Monitor input into database
FINANCES AND FUND DEVELOPMENT
• Assist Financial Officer in preparation of annual agency budget
• Assist Financial Officer with monitoring of a HJFS program budgets from a variety of funding partners including the Government of Ontario, The Claims Conference, and the Hamilton Jewish Federation
• Support Financial Officer, and Finance and Audit Committee, with the annual agency audit
• Research and write grant proposals that align with core agency priorities
• Update funding partners on priorities of agency, along with agency outcomes
• Solicit and engage potential funders, foundations, and private donors in the work being done by HJFS
• Participate in brainstorming and implementation of a variety of fundraising events – including annual Kosher Food Bank fundraiser, silent auction, tribute cards, et cetera
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Graduate degree or higher (MSW or equivalent preferred)
• Transparent, collaborative, and creative leadership style
• 5+ years of proven leadership experience in the non-profit sector
• Strong organizational skills including multitasking, organizing, delegating, program development, and evaluation
• Experience and skill working with a committed and engaged Board of Directors
• Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate vision, mission, challenges and opportunities to diverse audiences
• Willingness to learn about and participate in Jewish communal life
• Dedication to active community building, along with building a culture of equity and inclusion
• Experience with fundraising and fund development
• Commitment to agency priorities of Poverty Reduction, Life Navigation, Seniors Supports, and Mental Health
• The ability to laugh and work in a committed team environment
• Ability to work in evenings as required.
HOURS PER WEEK: Full-Time
