5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HEARING AIDS:
1. There are different styles & levels of technology
There are different ‘looks’ to hearing aids. They can be larger, smaller, more noticeable, while others are invisible! Hearing aids also come in different levels of technology. Higher level models are programmed with more sophisticated technology.
2. They take some getting used to
Most patients wait years before seeking treatment. As a result, it will take time to “learn” how to hear again. Even a mild hearing loss can extremely restrict a patient’s communication. Within a few weeks of practice, your hearing will become more natural and listening will become more effortless.
3. They have trial periods
Most hearing aid companies and clinics offer trial periods of up to 3 months. While some clinics may offer a quick in-clinic demo, the real test will be how they perform in your daily life.
4. They require some upkeep
Throughout the life of a hearing aid (approximately 3-5 years) several clinic visits are recommended. Annual hearing evaluations track any changes in your hearing. Most hearing aids can be reprogrammed to compensate for this. Ongoing service and cleaning appointments are also recommended.
5. They usually come in pairs
Two ears are better than one. If you have hearing loss in both ears, then the recommended treatment is typically two hearing aids. Two hearing aids allow you to hear more equally in both ears, which will help to identify the location of sounds and with filtering out background noise.

Lixil / American Standard
Aging in Place is defined as the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably regardless of age, income level, or ability level. Research from CMHC states most Canadians are not aware, or do not proactively plan for future home, apartment, or condo modifications. Rather they become interested only when they face a health crisis (slip, trip or fall). Lixil/American Standard has trained and certified aging in place specialists to help you plan your barrier-free, accessible.

Get Rid of Paperwork… NOW!
Since 2004, MySeniorCenter has been working with Older Adult Centres with one goal in mind – to eradicate paperwork. Our touchscreen-based check-in, tracking, scheduling and reporting system is specifically designed for Older Adult Centres. No more sign-in sheets, no more data entry into a spreadsheet, no more manual counting! And reports are available at your fingertips.
If you feel overwhelmed with paperwork now, it’s not going to get easier. Over the next 20 years, the number of seniors in Ontario will more than double. In fact, there’s a 20% increase coming in the next 3 years alone! That means more people qualifying for your services every day. And, since it’s unlikely that your budget will double in 3 years, you’ll need a new and more efficient way to track everyone’s services.
MySeniorCenter can help. It’s what we do – all day, every day.
Our partnership with OACAO allows us to offer a discounted rate to all OACAO members. If you’re interested in learning more, please let us know.
